LONSDALE CUP WON BY KENT
WELLINGTON. The New Zealand and Commonwealth Games Association has awarded the Lonsdale Cup for 1970 to the cyclist H. D. Kent, of Upper Hutt. The Cup is awarded by the association annually to the sportsman or sportswoman who has made the most outstanding contribution in any sport on the calendar of the British Commonwealth Games. Announcing the award, Mr C. L. S. Cross, chairman of the association, said Kent was a unanimous choice after his gold medal victory in the 1000
metres time trial in the Commonwealth Games at Edinburgh, which he fol- ' lowed with his second ' placing in the same event . at the world championships. , Kent’s performances, Mr j Cross said, exceeded all previous New Zealand , cycling efforts at world championships and Comi monvyealth Games. This fact, combined with the , outstanding qualities of sportsmanship possessed by Kent, made him a ■ most worthy recipient of the award. I *• > In November, Kent won the I New Zealand “Sportsman i of the Year” award.
