Encouraging times from young swimmers

With the Teleprinter carnival preliminaries only two woeks away, the times recorded by several young swimmers at the North Beach open carnival on Saturday afternoon were most encouraging. Among swimmers to impress with good 1 times were R. Gray (Wherenui), E. Box and Maureen McManus (both Elmwood), and Patricia Home (Wharenui). The race of the day was produced by two older swimmers, R. McCabe and J. Symon (both Sockburn Park), in the 200 yards freestyle event. Both were credited with 2min 4.9 sec but Symon won, catching McCabe in the last few strokes after trailing slightly for most of the race. Third in the event was Box, an under 12 swimmer, in a fast 2min 17.6 sec. B. Lewis (Spreydon) and J. Laugeson (Sockburn Park) provided excitement in the 200 yards breaststroke event with Lewis edging ahead over the latter stages to win in 2min 35sec with Laugeson 3-3 sec slower in second place, but still in a reasonable time.

NOTEWORTHY TIMES Several noteworthy times were returned in the 100 yards butterfly events. Janice Murdoch (Wharenui), an under 11 swimmer, was second in her section in Imin 27.35ec. Lynne Rowe (Wharenui). under 13, spread the field to win her race in Imin 16.1 sec, while Elizabeth Somers (Elmwood) won in Imin 13.8 sec. Gray had the best time for the event winning his section in Imin 4.3 sec.

A. Atkinson (Sockburn Park) swam the best time for an eight lengths individual medley with 3min 22.35ec. Lewis (3min 26.9 sec) and Judith Tomlinson (Elmwood) (3min 32.25ec) also swam good times. Gray and Laugeson provided a second close race in the 100 yards breaststroke, this time Laugeson winning by a narrow margin in Imin 15sec. Gray was .Bsec slower. Maureen McManus swam a fine race to win her

section in the good time of Imin 20.7 sec. The last race, a 100 yards freestyle event was one of the best of the day with Gray, McCabe, and Lewis finishing in that order. All recorded times under Imin. Patricia Horne impressed with a time of Imin 2.9 sec in her section, while M. Trembath (Wharenui), Maureen McManus and Lynne Rowe also provided good times.
