RISE FOR DRIVERS
Payment in advance To avoid the effects of a wages freeze if it is imposed by the Government, the Waimairi County Council on Thursday evening decided, without prejudice, to give its drivers an extra $4 a week, in addition to the interim increase of $2 a week they received recently to comply with the rates in a new award. The chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) told the council that the $6 increase was provided for in the new award, and a delay had occurred in getting the award ratified by the Arbitration Court. The Employers’ Federation had tried to get the concurrence of all cited employers agreeing to the increase. _ . “If a wage pause is officially declared, it could well embarrass the council if no action were taken to ratify the proposed rates,” said Mr Rich. “It would be unfair to the drivers, and a disadvantage to the council in staff relations if the new rates were not paid.” Cr W. T. Rice reported that metropolitan councils had dischssed a standardisation oi staff wages, and a further meeting would probably be held.
