Assurance on ‘tiger cages’

(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. New Zealand’s Embassy in Saigon has confirmed that "tiger cages” are no longer being used at Con Son, South Vietnam, for prisoners, the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake) has advised the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk). The reply is contained in a letter to Mr Kirk and follows an undertaking from the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) in Parliament last month to seek assurances from the Embassy that prison cages were now out of use. “The Embassy has confirmed that those at Con Son are no longer being used, but it is not in a position to give a categorical assurance that they are not being used anywhere in South Vietnam,” Sir Keith said. He pointed out that the international committee of the Red Cross visited South Vietnamese prisons and other detention centres from time to 'time.
