New air route for export of stock
A new air route from Tahiti to Santiago, Chile, is presenting fresh opportunities for the export of stud stock from New Zealand to South America.
i Next week, two stud Cor;riedale rams, purchased by Wright Stephenson and Com-j pany’s Christchurch branch for South American breeders, will be transported to their: destinations by this route. They will be the first exports of stud stock to South America for more than two i years. ! Previously, sheep for; South > America, when: freighted by air, travelled by way of Mexico City, but consignors met frequent difficulties with trans-shipment to South America.
; The two rams from New J Zealand will reach MonteI video in 93 hours. This will I include a stop of 27 hours in Tahiti, and one of 30 I hours at Santiago. ! The new, route from Tahiti to Santiago is being operated by Land Chile, the airi line operated by the Chilean I Government. i Air freight, crates, and 'incidental charges involved ih getting the two sheep to Montevideo will be equivalent to an air ticket for a tourist-class passenger. The rams were selected by Mr A. L. Smith, stud stock officer for Wright Stephenson’s at Christchurch, from the Coniston stud of Mr R. Robinson, Ashburton. They comprise a two-shear ram and a hoggest.
