Tiny foal “thriving”
A foal only 17 inches high when bom on Monday was so weak that its owner, Mr T. W. O’Connell, of Rangiora, did not expect it to survive its first night. However, even though it has been suffering from poisoning, for which it has been under veterin-
ary care, the foal is thriving, according to Mr O'Connell. The size of the foal is hardly surprising; its mother, Karen, is a Timor measuring only 10 hands and its sire, Quicksilver, is of a miniature breed also and a similar height. Because of the poisoning, Mr O’Connell had to milk the mare and feed the foal, but on Thursday it took its first drink direct from its mother.
“It should shoot ahead now,” Mr O’Connell said. Mr O’Connell had intended to exhibit the mare and foal at the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show at Kirwee today, but he thinks the foal is still too weak for this. “You get more for these than a full-sized pony, but I think I’ll keep it—as an ornament. The kids will love it,” said Mr O’Connell.
