Tragic celebration

' A policeman who fired two 1 shots from his pistol to cele-: brate an Italian goal in the World Cup soccer in Mexico last July—killing a woman passer-by—has been gaoled for involuntary murder. Traffic policeman Oronzo Quaranta, aged 26, was listening to the radio while on point duty when Italy’s leftwing, Gigi Riva, a local hero, scored a goal, putting his team ahead of the Mexicans in the quarter-finals. In a frenzy of jubilation, Quaranta pulled out his gun
and fired two shots. Miss Giuseppina Murrti, aged. 23, strolling by with her fiance, fell dead, slain with a single bullet. Quaranta was sentenced to four months gaol, plus 30 days for two other offences — wasting State property by firing the two bullets and disobeying standing orders against opening fire. He has been sacked from the police force and also faces civil proceedings to be brought by the dead woman’s relatives and a court-martial on military charges connected with the killing. > ,
