BUILDING SITES
“Conditions important” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 9. The importance of good working conditions on major building sites was stressed last week at New Zealand’s first building development conference. Mr A. Russ, secretary of the Carpenters and Related Trades Union, told the 200 delegates at Victoria University that initial negotiations on a building contract were not carried out on a site but in a comfortable office. Men disliked travelling home untidy on public transport. Good staff facilities on sites were essential if high morale was to be maintained. Some disruptive influence was caused by construction workers from the Northern Hemisphere who had come to New Zealand under the impression that conditions here were better than at home. The conference was organised by the Wellington branch of the Building Research Association.
