AGE-GROUP SWIMMING
Three swimmers qualified for open carnivals in the two agegroup meetings on Saturday. One carnival was held at the 110yard Elmwood pool and the other at the 100 yard Beckenham pool. Besides the host clubs swimmers, competitors from North Beach St Albans were at Elmwood and Sockburn Park and Wharenui club members swam at Beckenham. Miss C. McManus (Elmwood) qualified for open carnivals with a time of Imin 30.3 sec in the under 14 breaststroke race and at the ssme meeting D. Verbitski (Nortn Beach) recorded Imin 7.Bsec in a freestyle event. S. Poore (Wharenui) qualified In the under 12 -breaststroke at (the Beckenham carnival, record--1 ing Imin 49.65ec, and beating {the qualifying time by .4sec. Miss J. Anink (North Beach) I recorded some excellent times jin the under 10 events. She won la backstroke and freestyle race, and was not far off the qualifying times. Entries for the two carnivals were not large, but numbers are expected to 1 increase at the meetings from next week, and several more chUdren who are near the quaUfying times are expected to beat them in the next few weeks.
The Canterbury Swimming Centre’s programme has not been published yet and it is thought that a number of peg-, sons do not know the carnivals have begun. The booklet will be published this week.
