Opposition to dinner
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The New Zealand "Sportsman of the Year” dinner in Auckland next week faces opposition in the form of wine and cheese evening to choose the “international sportsman of the year.” The conflicting function is the work of the Citizens* Association for Racial Equality and the University of Auckland International Affairs Committee.
Their evening is to coincide with the visit of the president of the South African Rugby Board (Dr Danie Craven), who will be the guest speaker at this year’s “Sportsman of the Year” dinner. At the wine and cheese evening, the organisers will hold a ballot to choose the sportsman or sportswoman who during 1970 has done most to advance the “Olympic ideals of sport for all Without discrimination as to race, -colour or creed.” Among their possible contenders they list the former All Black, K. F. Gray, the American Negro tennis star, A. Ashe, a New Zealand athlete, Margaret Snow, and six former Wallabies who have toured South Africa.
