Petrol tax opposed

(N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM, Oct. 18. The Counties Association was strongly opposed to suggestions from the municipalities for an extra petrol tax to subsidise rating and in the Carter report that a similar tax be used to assist municipal transport, the' chairman of the Kaikoura County Council (Mr V. J. Corbett) said at the council’s meeting on Friday. “The association believes that any increase in petrol tax should go to the National Roads Board.” Mr Corbett was authorised to attend next week’s special meeting of county chairmen, which, he said, would be preceded by a meeting between executive officers of the Municipal- Association and Counties Association and the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake).
