Pollution remit 5 years too late

New Zealand Jaycees were five years too late in getting interested in pollution and conservation a delegate said at the national convention in Christchurch on Saturday.

Mr P. Fearon (OtahuhuPapatoetoe), said organisations far better equipped were attempting to tackle what he described as “the world’s major problems.”

His comments were made during a debate on a remit which sought the New Zealand Jaycees to investigate the problems of conservation, preservation and pollution, with the results to be made available to the public.

Supporting the move, the president of the Howick chapter (Mr J. Mace), said the remit offered a challenge to tackle one of the complex problems facing the world today. “The magnitude of the problem grows daily,” he said. The remit was defeated. A move to seek legislation establishing a 5c refund'on all empty beer and soft drink bottles was also defeated. Speakers supporting the move said present anti-litter penalties were inadequate and difficult to police.
