SOUTHERN LEAGUE

Ist division unchanged There will be no radical changes made to the southern league soccer competition for the 1971 season. This was the general impression formed after the meeting of club delegates in Dunedin on Saturday morning. The move to split the competition into northern and southern zones was not acceptable, as far as the present 10team first division was concerned, but there is a possibility still of two sections of the second division being formed. A large majority of delegates opposed any change to the first division but there was a wide division of opinion about altering the second division. The matter will now be discussed by the Southern Regional Council, comprising delegates from \ all the associations affiliated to the competition, next month. The council will then decide on the feasibility of making two sections of the second division, in northern (Canterbury, South Canterbury, Mid-Canterbury, and West Coast) and southern (Southland, Otago and North Otago) zones. If it decides to make this move, the council would also decide the number of clubs from each group that would go through to a play-off series to find the over-all second division champion and promotion candidate.
