Arsenal takes second place in U.K. soccer

LONDON. Leeds United had its lead at the head of the English first division soccer table cut to two points after being held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United on Saturday. Arsenal jumped into second place, with 18 points from 13 matches, crushing the league champion, Everton, 4-0, in front of a 50,000 crowd. Manchester City dropped to third place, one point behind Arsenal, after a 1-1 draw with Southampton.

Tottenham Hotspur, which trails Manchester City on goal average, also had to share the points, 2-2, with struggling West Ham United. R. Tambllng and A. Birchenall, both signed from Chelsea during the closed season, scored Crystal: Palace’s match-winning goals in its 34) victory over West Bromwich Albion, to keep the London club in fourth position with 17 points.
