Monowai A leads in women’s softball
Monowai A repulsed a > spirited sixth innings batting rally by Spreydon on Saturday to become the outright leader of the Canterbury women's senior softball championship. In a tight match, Spreydon launched a determined rally to score two runs, but Monowai A held on to win, 3-2.
Western Suburbs capitalised on Monowai B's inconsistent fielding and went on to gain its first win of the season. 13-10.
Christchurch West had the bye.
MONOWAI A 3, SPREYDON 2 Monowai A opened the scoring in the first innings when B. Turbott, who was walked, scored after a bunt by N. Beale and a wild throw.
A. Phillips hit safely and added Monowai’s second run in the fourth innings when J. Lee managed a hard drive. B. Turbott gained her second run of the match in the fifth innings,
mainly because of Spreydon’s fielding errors. . Spreydon could manage only ! four runners on bases in its first , five innings, but compensated ; with a fine home-run by M. Lee ' in the sixth. H. Thyne and H. , Tobeck batted well and Thyne j scored on a sacrifice into the , outfield by B. Hawthorne. M. Eaton gained two strike ' outs and conceded five hits while . pitching for Monowai A. For ' Spreydon, H. Thyne struck out ' three batters, and gave up four . walks and six safe hits. WEST SUBURBS 13, MONOWAI B 10 Western Suburbs scored five runs between the second and fourth innings and then held off its opponent s challenge for the ' rest of the match. I Good batting by P. Alston, V. | Gage. R. Seddon. and M. Tinker, , together with lethargic Monowai : B fielding, contributed to the I runs. | - Monowai B’s scoring began . when S. Stead and R. 1 Phillips crossed the home plate. I Further hits by W. Anderton i and A. Mackaway-Jones helped . Monowai B maintain a steady suppl> of runs. although it <
trailed Western Suburbs by four runs with two innings remaining. C. Scott reduced the.deficit by a run but good fielding, especially by Gage, helped to keep Monowai B contained.
LOWER GRADE RESULTS The Canterbury Softball Association’s women’s lower grade matches played on Saturday resulted:
Second Grade. —Monowai 9, Wigram 8; Vanguard 16, Christchurch West 5; Western Suburbs 6, Lyttelton 5.
Third Grade.—Burnside 9, Monowai 8.
