SUMMER COURSE

University scheme Next year and in 1972 the English 1A university degree course can be taken by study at a summer holiday course held in January, the director of extension studies at the University of Otago (Professor D. W. Rutherford) has announced.' It is believed the course will be the first of its type held in this country, and it is probably a forerunner of future developments in university extension work. Work for one paper of the subject will be studied in lectures and tutorials during the four weeks of each summer course. Two essays will be required of each student, and these will be discussed at a week-end school in April.

The examination will be held in May. The 1971 course will be verse and fiction, and it will be conducted by members of the English department staff. The course fee will be $25, and the 1972 course will cover drama and fiction. The course is intended fot members of the public, and also for those who have not had the opportunity of fulltime university study, or who are at present studying fulltime and wish to make sure of graduating in the minimum time.
