Traffic regulations
Sir,—ln some areas gazetted 30 m.p.h. not only “Hard Hit” but traffic officers can find themselves exceeding 30 as the natural thing to do. It is commonplace to have a Transport Department car in your stream of traffic travelling at 35 or 40 and giving no tickets, on eastern Blenheim Road, Riccarton Avenue, Yaldhurst Road, to mention just a few places. There are two “mufti” cars I have got to know, one fortuitously, one unfortunately. I see these exceeding 30 on a clear road. Their somewhat theatrical performances (donning hats and suddenly blowing secret sirens), may encourage this excessive imitation of the public. Perhaps Mr Hogan’s wise platitude “known consequences must be faced,” could be footnoted with, a “mufti” car is unknown for what its does one way or another until it is known.— Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN. October 9,1970.
