COMPUTER AID

The economics of the purchase of a computer to serve the major local authorities in Christchurch should be investigated, the Waimairi County Council decided on Thursday evening. The council discussed the report of the county treasurer (Mr W. Knudsen) on the subject after staff members had seen the demonstration of a computer (costing about $45,000) ■by a commercial firm.

At present the council hires time from a computer bureau, as do other local authorities. School Water.—The council resolved to object to an application by the Canterbury Education Board to take 10,000 gallons of water a day from a well at Kendal School for domestic and irrigation purposes. The council decided it wished to be heard at the board application to the North Canterbury Catchment Board. Surprise was expressed at the board not taking advantage of the council’s fluoridated water supply. Cr W. R. Holmes did not vote on the matter.
