Longer Derby?

The distance of the New Zealand Derby Stakes this year will be increased by one furlong to 13 furlongs, if the programme for the New Zealand Cup meeting in November is approved by the New Zealand Trotting Conference. The Derby has been run over the traditional distance of 12 furlongs since 1925, but this starting point at Addington Raceway is an awkward one and close to the first bend. Often the start has resulted in much interference.
