Five Changes In Shield Team

Five changes have been made in the Canterbury Rugby team to defend the Ranfurly Shield against Buller tomorrow.

Included in the reserves is the former All Black, D. A. Arnold. Earlier this season Arnold announced his retirement from firstclass Rugby, but later said he would be available for Canterbury if required.

For the last month Arnold has been on holiday with his wife in Australia and he was due back in Christchurch yesterday.

Two members of the Canterbury team which beat Taranaki on Saturday were not considered for tomorrow because of injury. They are the left wing, M. S. Moore, who left the field at half-time with a severely sprained ankle, and K. J. Gimblett, who has bruised ribs. R. J. Woolhouse, who was a late withdrawal from Saturday’s team because of a poisoned leg, is still not available.

The three-quarter line tomorrow will be the same as for the second half of the Taranaki match—R. I. Knight at centre and R. F. Cocks and L. W. Jones on the wings. Knight’s Christchurch club team-mate, M. R. McEwan, will come in at second fiveeighths in place of Gimblett. The three changes in the forwards appear to be in line with the selectors’ policy of ensuring that players are kept as fresh as possible. E. R. Leask will replace R. I. Lockwood as H. H. McDonald’s locking partner and C. I. Read

will be on the side of the scrum in place of S. E. Cron.

K. J. Tanner, who played against Waikato but missed the Taranaki match, will return to the front row and A McLellan will take a turn in ’the stand. ■ The team is:—W. I. Lewis; Cocks. Knight. Jones: McEwan, O. D. Bruce; L. J. Davis, I. H. Penrose; A. C. Matheson, Me'Donald, Leask, Read; L. D. Adam, R. W. Norton, Tanner. Reserves: B. F. Elder, L- G. I Legge. Arnold, I. Grant, Lockjwood. Cron, McLellan.
