Festival Of Literature
Arrangements for a minifestival of literature, incorporating five national competitions, were discussed at the August meeting of the South Island Writers’ Association. The major contest will be for a novel in a New Zealand setting, to be sponsored by Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd, with a cash prize of $2OO and publication in New Zealand and England if a suitable standard is reached. The young writers’ award, a biennial short story competition, sponsored by the association for persons under
21, will be judged by the editorial committee of “Edge,” a new production associated with the University of Canterbury. The young poets’ award for persons under 19, will be sponsored for the second time by the “Christchurch Star.” Other competitions open to all ages for a short story and article are being arranged. It was announced that a special competition for members who had not won a poetry competition will be sponsored by Mr M. Marshall. The festival will culminate in a function on December 2, when it is planned to announce results and present awards. Mr R. T.
