PRECLUDING ROYALTIES
(N.Z- Press Assn.— Copyright) CANBERRA, Sept. 4. Australian broadcasting stations are considering setting up their own record company to solve a dispute about playing British records on the air. The Postmaster-General, Mr Alan Hulme, told the House of Representatives today that he understood some commercial stations were contemplating forming such a company to make records. This was because of a dispute over payment of royalties for British records.
The dispute did not affect the Australian Broadcasting Commission because it paid the fees, amounting to a substantial sum. Australian commercial radio stations have been refusing to pay royalties asked by record manufacturing companies for about four months. They claim they have been advertising the records by playing them.
