GAOL FOR PERJURY

Ex*Aide To U.S. Speaker (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Sept. 3. Dr Martin Sweig, a former chief aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr John McCormack—the third most important man in the United States after the President and Vice-President —was today gaoled for perjury. Sweig, aged 48, was sentenced to two years and a half in gaol and fined $2OOO.

Sweig was found guilty of one count of perjury by a Federal jury in July. At the same time he was acquitted of five other perjury charges and a charge of conspiring to use the office of the Speaker to defraud the Government Sweig was flowed to remain free on $50,000 personal recognisance bail pending an appeal against conviction.
