Noise
Sir,—Thank you for obtaining a reply from the Town Clerk, but it seems that in spite of the courtesy of his reply the Town Clerk is astray when he overlooks the fact that the residents near the club site had to give their approval before the council would give the club permission to build in Tankerville Road. I can recall being approached by two persuasive gentlemen who canvassed for my signature to their application to build; but while outlining the advantages of a social and sports club in the district they neglected to forewarn us as to what would happen when such a club could have hours of drinking far in excess of even the busiest hotel. What, then, are the views of the Licensing Control Commission (safely ensconsed in Wellington away from all the noise in Tankerville Road), on the licence and conduct of this club? —Yours, etc.,
ANTI-NOISE PROMOTERS. August 28, 1970. [Mr E. M. Basil-Jones, secretary of the Licensing Control Commission, replies: “This charter was granted by the commission in 1964; there were no restrictions placed upon it. The charter authorised the club to sell liquor for consumption on the premises up to IO p.m. Monday to Saturday. Under certain circumstances any magistrate may from time to time grant an extension of these hours. The commission administers the Sale of Liquor Act but does not police it If a nuisance is being created it is a matter for complaint to the police.”]
