Repechage Win By N.Z. Four
(Special Correspondent NZ.P.A.) ST CATHERINES. The New Zealand four was untroubled to win the repechage heat in the world rowing championships yesterday. 1
After an excellent start the New Zealand rowers soon dropped their stroking to 34 and after the 500 reduced to a leisurely 29. Great Britain tried but the New Zealand stroke, R. Johnston, had them in hand at all stages. Sweden and Canada fought out for third, Canada finally sneaking in. New Zealand’s time of 6min 26.055ec was the slowest heat but it was only playing with the opposition. Faster Race In contrast, the United States gave Russia a great race. Russia had to work to come in first in 6min 21sec with the United States second.
Australia was eliminated from the final when it was beaten by Norway in 6min 18.7 sec. Italy was second and Australia third. Only two from each heat joined Wednesday’s winners for the semi-finals today. The New Zealand pair were eliminated when they failed to make the first three placings in their heat. They came down the course stroking about 33 but faded early.

Eights (three to qualify in each heat). —First heat: Russia 1, U.S. 2, Italy 3, France 4. Time: 5:50.56. Second heat: Norway 1, Poland 2, Austria 3. Canada 4. Time: 5:43.61. Third heat: Britain 1, West Germany 2, Australia 3, Finland 4. Time: 5:44.70.
