Hockey Final Today

North Otago will contest the final of the minor section for the Mills Cup after its defeat of Poverty Bay yesterday in the semifinal of the national women’s hockey tournament at Ashburton. North Otago will meet Taranaki in the final, to be played this morning. The semi-final was particularly even but the holder, Poverty Bay, could not complete its movements. North Otago settled first but Poverty Bay was first to look really dangerous near the goal and was unlucky not to score at least once in the first 20 minutes. However, in one of the brief forays into Poverty Bay territory, Miss K. Stringer scored for North Otago. After 20 minutes in the

second half, Miss Stringer scored again with a well-hit shot that deflected off the goal-keeper’s pad. Not long after, Miss D. Tureia scored for Poverty Bay, from a penalty hit just outside the circle when she gathered the ball and pushed it into the goal. Four trial teams, from which a training squad will be selected in preparation for next year’s international tournament at Auckland, were announced by New Zealand selectors.
