It is hoped that the appointee will be able to take up duty early in 1971. The Chair will be attached to • a department within the Faculty of Arts appropriate to the ap- , pointee’s interests but the pos- ■ sibility that Religious Studies might eventually be a separate department is not precluded. The Professor will be asked to • establish a course in religious studies which will be a scholarly and critical treatment of various areas of religion. He will be expected to have a specific competence within an area of religious studies and the ability to organise and teach courses at the University level. It is not the University’s intention to establish a programme in Theology but to undertake the study of religious as intellectual and conceptual systems and as moral and ideological forces as well as historical and social phenomena. The salary for the post is $14,400 per annum Australian currency. The University provides reasonable travel and removal expenses and assistance with housing. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern with supplementary benefits. Financial assistance towards study leave is also available.
