RANDOM REMINDER
THE BETTER PART OF VALOUR
Today’s story did not come from anyone, it comes from a piece of paper picked up on the beach at the very end of South Shore, across the way from Shag Rock. There were no boy’s clothes lying in the vicinity so it was surmised that what was picked up was all that had been discarded, and that the party most (surely not least) concerned had gamely decided to carry on regardless. It is a fifth form high school report, duly and no doubt sadly signed by the headmaster and in like
vein initialled by various masters whose unrewarding duty must have been to endeavour to make a worthy citizen of one who, temporarily averse to making friends and influencing people with anything too materialistic in mind, may some day make a take-over bid for General Motors or wear our mayoral gowns. Be that as it may, for reasons best known to himself we will allow him to remain, not ignominious but anonymous. Excerpts from the report read as follows: Subject Remarks English: No effortr-No progress.
Social Studies: Should have tried harder. Mathematics: No effort, thus no progress. Distracted too easily. Physical Education: Lazy must try much harder. Form Teacher’s remarks: More resolution needed. There is no parental signature in the space provided so one is led to. believe that the loss of the report saved someone some pain and we can only hope that the high school involved had insufficient report forms to send out duplicates where originals were inadvertently mislaid.
