TORTURE IN BRAZIL
Senate Group Concerned (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 3. A Senate foreign relations sub-committee will hold hearings later this year on charges that prisoners have been torture 4 in Brazil, Congressional sources disclosed in Washington. The Brazilian Military Government has denied that torture is being practised. The State Department has expressed concern over the charges and said that it was assured that torture was not condoned by the Brazilian Government.
The Brazil torture charges have been given new impetus recently by the International Commission of Jurists and the Rev. Louis M. Colonnese, Latin American director of the United States Catholic Conference. Father Colonnesse said last week that a dossier prepared by university professors teaching Brazilian affairs alleged that torture against opponents of the military now appeared to be the chief technique of police investigation and inquiry.
