Four-Year Plan (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association should embark on a programme aimed at producing a strong, fully representative team at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. the association’s management committee was told by the athletics manager at Edinburgh (Mr B. H. Kerr).

He said that Scottish athletics received its biggest boost from the success of many Scottish members at Edinburgh, and he believed New Zealand athletics would receive a similar stimulus as Kiwis won medals in 1974 before a New Zealand crowd. However, any development would need to start immediately. Mr Kerr said that in 1971 and 1972 the emphasis should be on increasing numbers in the sport, and the Pacific Conference Games team of 1973 should be a “shadow” team for the 1974 Commonwealth Games.

In December, 1973, a New Zealand trials meeting should be held at Lancaster Park to help in team selection and also to act as a major rehearsal for the Games track and field organisation. , Mr Kerr said the tartan track should be laid early in the 1973-74 season to allow New Zealand athletes the opportunity of training and competing on the surface.
