Watch Still Kept On Oil Hazard

North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society rangers were still keeping a close eye on wildlife in the Heathcote River and on the Estuary following the 2000-gallon oil spillage into the river on Saturday, said the secretary (Mr H. B. Barker) yesterday.

The society was particularly concerned about the colonies of penguins in the Scarborough area, Mr Barker said. They appeared to be all right so far. However, penguins and ducks made themselves sick when preening themselves to get rid of oil, and the oil got in their gullets. In many cases, it took several days for the birds to become sick. Mr Baker said that a seagull, five ducks and a cat

Hwere found in a slightly > distressed condition, through - oil, in the Estuary yesterday. . The cat had been chasing t (ducks when it went into the > water and oil. >( Mr B. N. Norris, an hon- - orary wildlife ranger, said he [ had had reports of another .(four ducks and a black shag I being distressed by oil. Three : of the ducks were being cared for by their finders and the -others had not been ret( covered.
