Oil Shortage Predicted

(N.Z .P.A. -Reuter-— Copyright) LONDON, August 31. The world might face a critical oil shortage within 15 years if British and American aircraft manufacturers sold their planned total of supersonic airliners, a British newspaper said yesterday. The ’ Observer” said that this was the unmistakable conclusion to be drawn from an analysis of the planes’ projected fuel consumption, and the amount of oil the petroleum industry is expected to provide by 1985. Calculations showed that even by 1980 the fleet of supersonic aircraft envisaged —3OO Concordes and 80 Boeings—would demand the production of about 320-mil-lion metric tons of crude oil a year. This was nearly one third of the total projected oil consumption of Western Europe and the United States for the same year, and 8 per cent of the world consumption.

The “Observer” added that the Boeing fleet would have increased to 285 in 1985, making an even more serious drain on world oil supplies.
