RIVERS FALL
Pass Road To Open The two major Canterbury rivers in flood on Monday, the Rakaia and Waimakariri. were late yesterday continuing to fall slowly. The weather in both catchment areas was improving, said the chief engineer of the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr E. B. Dalmer). The Waimakariri, which on Monday reached 21ft at the Gorge bridge, dropped almost 6ft The Rakaia, which was lift above normal at the Gorge bridge on Monday, had dropped 4ft by 4 pjn. yesterday.
Only the road between Christchurch and Arthur’s Pass remained closed yesterday. The Automobile Association (Canterbury) reported that there were washouts at the Broken River and Porter River bridges. The road is likely to be opened today. The Lindis Pass on State Highway 8 was still closed at midday, the Ministry of Works reported. It was not known when it would reopen. Repair work includes realignment of a portion of highway and the erection of a Bailey Bridge over a washout
