RETURN TO WORK
Chch Airport Wardens Airport security wardens and cleaners who walked off the job at Christchurch airport at midnight on Monday over grievances about pay and working conditions returned to work last night The Christchurch City Council’s staff committee chairman (Mr E. B. E. Taylor) and the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey) conferred late yesterday afternoon with the secretary of the Caretakers' and Cleaners’ Union (Mr C. J. Cummings). In the discussions that followed a date was set for later in the month when a meeting will take place with union representatives.
According to Mr Cummings the men were “disgusted at the procrastination of the Christchurch City Council, which seemed to think that workers on the lowest rates of pay should have the long-i est to wait for justice.” Mr Cummings said the men were called on to work on Saturdays without the proper penal rates of payment He added that he had been asking for an urgent meeting with the council since August 12. The present industrial agreement with the council expired on August 18. Eight wardens are employed at the airport By day their job entails assisting with traffic control; at night they act .as security staff.
