PARK ROAD ACTION

Council To Meet A special meeting of the City Council has been requisitioned by the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey) for next Monday to discuss the reply of the Minister of Lands (Mr Maclntyre) to a request for his consent to deviation of Harper Avenue across North Hagley Park; and to decide on what action should be taken.

The Minister said he had no power to consent to the road and proposed that the council should sponsor a local bill to tidy up legislation thought to govern the park and other Christchurch re-' serves.

To get such a bill through Parliament has been estimated to take up to a year, even though the Minister has offered all help possible to I expedite it The Assistant DirectorGeneral of Lands (Mr N. S. Coad) came to Christchurch from Wellington yesterday. Accompanied by technical officers of his department he had a “working session” with council officers and also met the Mayor. The results of the discussions will be reported to a meeting of the parks and recreation committee next Monday afternoon before the special council meeting.
