Obituary
MR C. H. CROMBIE Mr Cecil Hunter Crombie, who was prominent in New Zealand shipping circles for many years, died in Christchurch recently at the age of 66. He was well known for many years as general manager of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, whose coasters, the Storm, Gale, Breeze, Calm and Squall traded out of Lyttelton. Born in Oamaru in December, 1903,' Mr Crombie was educated at South School, Oamaru, and Waitaki Boys’ High School. He began work in the office of Ireland and Company in Oamaru, but later moved to Christchurch to further his studies in accountancy, and worked for a public accountant, Mr J. RoySmith. Mr Crombie was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries. In 1927, he joined A. H. Turnbull and Company on the shipping side and moved with the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company when it opened separate offices. He was appointed general manager in 1940 on the retirement of Captain Hugh Monro. In 1960 he joined the board of directors. He retired in September, 1969. Mr Crombie was president of the New Zealand Shipowners’ Federation for a number of years, and was a member of the executive of the New Zealand Port Employers’ Association. In his younger years, he represented North Otago at both Rugby and rowing. He played senior cricket for Christchurch for some years. He also took a keen interest in racing and was a member of a number of racing and trotting clubs. He was a steward of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club for many years.
Mr Crombie is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
