Hairdressers’ Plan
The compulsory registration of all women’s hairdressers in New Zealand is being sought by the Council of Ladies’ Hairdressers, which has opened a national register and has asked all women’s hairdressers with six or more years experience, as at May 2, to auply for registration by September 14.
“Compulsory legislation, if approved by the Government, will be a safeguard to the
public," Mr J. B. Yates, sec- I retary of the Canterbury, i Westland, Nelson and Marl-1 borough Ladies’ Haidressers’ i Association, said. “At present, i anyone can open a salon after 1 only two or three months ex- i perience. This affords no pro- i tection whatsoever to the public. . “Today, the trade has be- ' come much more technical 1 because of its wider range 1 and the more specialised pro- i ducts available. Ladies’ hair- i dressers feel that they are 1 safeguarding their own repu- ,1 tation to the public by estab-' lishing this register. i “It has happened that, with 1 the misuse of some products 1
by inexperienced people, a person’s hair has actually flowed down the basin. This is just one example of the misuse of products. We feel that inexperienced hairdressers are doing an injustice to the trade.” Mr Yates said that his association had been in touch with all its members, and all the associations in New Zealand were encouraging everyone involved to apply for registration because stringent tests would be required after .September 14. "The registration is the culmination of many years of planning on a national basis,” Mr Yates added.
