Sports Tournament Results

GIRLS' HOCKEY Rlversdale Darfield (Canterbury) scored a convincing win over Lumsden (Southland) in the Anal of the South Island tournament yesterday. Leading 1-0 at halftime, Darfield took command in the second half and won 5-0. Its goals were scored by L. Gilmore (2), J. Farrant, S. Brown and E. Clarkson. Other results were:

Section A.—Gore 5, South Otago 1; Waitaki 5, Otago 0; Darfield 13, St Catherines College 0. Final points: Darfield 10, Gore 7, Waitaki 7, South Otago 4, Otago 2, St Catherines 0.

Christchurch Playing a hard, long-hitting game. Columba showed its fitness in the final against St Margaret’s College and won the match by a penalty goal, after a bully taken for Columba by Its centre-forward, J. Gillespie. The Columba backs, N. Struthers and 1. Hoare, were reliable and covered well, and the left-wing, W. Struthers, made many penetrating runs. St Margaret’s used shortpassing movements, with good distribution of the ball from its centre-half, V. McGregor, and left-inner, L. Patterson. The goal-keeper, J. Rymer, showed no hesitation in coming out of her goal. Results were:

BOYS' HOCKEY Christchurch Linwood and Hamilton will meet in the final of the John* son Cup tournament today. Linwood beat the skilful St Paul’s Collegiate .team, 2-1, in a section play-off yesterday morning, and then defeated Cashmere, 3-0, in the semi-final.

Hamilton, which had won all its section matches, yesterday struck its first hard game against Shirley, in a semi-final. With the score 2-all, extra time was played, and Hamilton added two more goals. The final will be played at Linwood at 1.30 p.m. Results:

Wellington Christchurch Boys’ High School and Hagley High School struggled, in their last section games yesterday, but both finally won.

On their over-all form and the performances of the teams they will meet, they should win this morning’s semi-finals, making the final an allChristchurch one in the after* noon.

Christchurch was hardpressed throughout the second half of its match against Wellington High School, after leading 2-0 at half-time, it scored the winning goal in the last minute of play, to win, 3-2. Hagley won, 3-0, but was harrassed throughout by a lively, if unskilled combined XI. In today’s semi-finals, Hagley

will play Wellington High School and Christchurch will meet Wellington College. SOCCER Christchurch Christchurch Boys’ High School and Mount Albert Grammar gained commanding leads in their sections of the New Zealand secondary schools soccer tournament at Hillmorton yesterday. In Section A, Christchurch has a lead of four points, and Mount Albert heads Section B by two points. Both teams won by the same margin, 2-0, yesterday, and are likely to meet in the final tomorrow. Only one round was played yesterday, and in the afternoon the home and visiting tournament teams met. The match was drawn, 2-2.
