Canterbury Has Narrow Win In Netball

“The Press’* Special Service DUNEDIN. Canterbury, South Canterbury, Rotorua and Wellington again won both their games on the second day of the New Zealand netball tournament at the Memorial Courts yesterday.

Rotorua defeated Hutt Valley to put Hutt in line with Auckland three wins and one loss each.

Strong winds kept scoring low and allowed lower-rated teams to make strong challenges. Matamata led Canterbury until well into the second half of their game and Canterbury was severely taxed to hold its 22-19 lead for the final minutes of play. Southland held South Canterbury to 9-ail at half-time and Auckland sub-associations was 8-8 with Auckland at the same stage. Tactical Victory Rotorua had a surprisingly easy win over Hutt Valley, with a half-time score of 10-5. It was a tactical game, Rotorua’s goal and wing attacks blocking the Hutt wing attack in centre court. Mrs S. Rogers played a strong game at goal-keep for Canterbury against Northland, as did Miss L. Burney at wing defence. Miss S. Norman moved well against the strong defence of Northland’s goal-keep. Miss P. Fountain, and considering the blustery wind Canterbury did well to score 30 goals.

Matamata played a splendid game against Canterbury and was leading, 15-10, at halftime. Miss R. Groube was an outstanding centre and the two shooters. Misses A. and C. Downey, shot with amazing accuracy. The wind was so strong that many attempts at goal were carried yards away from the goal ring. Two Key Players

Mrs J. Harnet carried the Canterbury team, and with Miss E. Price, persevered in securing rebounds to shoot, until they finally equalled and then passed the Matamata score.

Wellington continued to play fast combinations and has won all of its four games by 16 goals and more.

Miss E. Murdoch (Southland) has been shooting solidly but South Canterbury looked a superior team, with Miss L. Jackson taking some splendid interceptions at wing defence. South Canterbury also had an easy win over Matamata, 24-9. Otago and Southland are giving their opponents good games, and although losing they will remain a challenge. The main game today will be between South Canterbury and Wellington and the result must re-arrange the leading teams.
