Eight-Goal Win By Hockey Champion

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, August 26. Canterbury convincingly won its second-round match, beating Manawatu, 8-0, in the Challenge Shield men’s hockey competition at Hobson Park yesterday.

The selector - coach (Mr C. V. Walter) elected to rest three New Zealand representatives —B. Mabter, J. H. Christenson and K. Thomson, and this policy should prove to be the wise one when Canterbury meets Auckland today.

The eight-goal defeat of Manawatu emphasised the depth of strength available in Canterbury hockey. A. Patterson led his side with considerable authority. Although the score was 5-0 at half-time, any tendency to ease up was erased by the memory of the manner in which Whangarel had fought back from a 0-3 deficit in the previous match. The Challenge Shield holder has impressed with its ability to develop attacks based upon direct passing and Intensive backing up. The cover > defence has also proved itself sound under pressure. Goal scorers for Canterbury

were T. Burrows (2), W. Thomson (2), J. Borren (2), Patterson and B. Aldridge. W. Thomson has been playing very well in tournament matches to date. Wellington had little trouble disposing of the lively young Hawke’s Bay side, 2-0. Its victory was based upon a high percentage of possession, short, direct passing,

and close ball control. Two of the Wellington forwards to impress were T. TrevenaBrown and A- Mclntyre. Auckland showed little attacking variation beating Whangarei, 1-0. Only L. Ahsam demonstrated 'the close ball control necessary to maintain possession against a team using the retreating cover-defence. Results were: Rothman’s Cup.—Walrarapa 4, Bay of Plenty 1; Auckland B 7, South Canterbury 0; Otago 3, Air Force 2; Taranaki 6. Southland 1. Challenge Shield.—Canterbury 8, Manawatu 0; Wellington 2, Hawke’s Bay 0; Wanganui 1, Waikato I; Auckland 1, Whangarei 0.
