Gretel II Has 2nd Win

The Australian yacht Gretel II yesterday won by only 30 yards in the second elimination race against France in the trial series to select an America’s Cup challenger. Gretel II used her superiority on the windward legs to win after an exciting tactical battle in which the lead changed several times. The Australians are now halfway towards victory over the French yacht in the best-of-seven series. The winner will meet the American defender, now certain to be either Intrepid or Valiant. CROQUET TITLE Mrs B. A. Jarden, of Wellington, won the major title in the English women’s croquet last week-end —the Ladies Field Cup tournament
at. Cheltenham. It is played on a round-robin basis between the top eight players in the country. Mrs Jarden and Miss K. M. O. Sessions finished the 14round tournament with 12 wins and two losses. The New Zealander then defeated Miss Sessions in the play-off. Mrs Jarden will now play in the President’s Cup at Hurlingham, contested by the top eight players in England. She is the only woman in the field. —N.Z.P.A., London. WIN The American. Billy Casper, calmly established a 'three-stroke lead yesterday and coasted to his fourth victory of the season by winning the Avco golf classic. Casper, the 39-year-old United States Masters champion, had a final round of 69
team on the latter part of its North Island tour, reported this to last evening’s meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union.

Taylor, with a six-over 77, led the field by two strokes after the first round- of the Waikato women’s open championship at St Andrew’s yesterday.

Nissen (West Germany) won the women’s final when she beat Miss E. Goolagong (Australia), 7-5, 6-3. Loss To Cricket.—The Central Districts and Wairarapa cricket administrator, Mr D. Collinge, died yesterday mornihg in Masterton. Mr Collinge was known nationally for the work he did for cricket. He is the father of the New Zealand pace bowler, R. O, Collinge. • Laver Wins.—R. Laver beat another Australian, R. Emerson. 6-3, 7-5, to win the colonial national invitation tennis tournament at Fort Worth, Texas.. Laver received $3575 to push his earnings this year past $120,550. English League. Wakefield Trinity beat Hull, 27-5, in a Rugby League match played at Wakefield. /
