P. B. VINCENTS INFLUENCE

W. J. Lewis, who will make his debut for Canterbury in the Ranfurly Shield match against Waikato on Saturday, became a fullback on the adviee of P. B. Vincent, the man who captained Canterbury during its last shield era. In his days as a lower grade footballer, Lewis played either as a wing or a second five-eighths. But at Christchurch Boys’ High School, H. T. Joseph, L. W.

Jones and L. G. Legge were among his contemporaries,

and Mr Vincent switched him to full-back. He played for the school’s first XV in this position in 1965 and 1966. Lewis represented Canterbury regularly in lower grade Rugby, but it was not until he Ifeft school that he became a goal-kicker. Last season he was brought into the University A senior team in the sixth round of the competition and finished the

year with 81 points, including five tries. This season he was a key member of the University A side which won the D.C.L. Shield and shared the Hare-wood-Trophy with Christchurch. He was the leading individual scorer with 113 points, including:four tries. Lewis has not had. a game in the last three weeks, but he has maintained his fitness by training with the Canterbury B squad.
