RUGBY LEAGUE Howlck

Auckland won both the Rothmans Trophy and Amalgamated Shield in the national schoolboys' Rugby league tournament, which ended at Howlck yesterday. Last year’s champion, Canterbury, failed to win a game, and Waikato was runnerup. Results: Section A.—Auckland 41, Canterbury 4; Waikato 22, West Coast 8.

BOYS' HOCKEY Wellington Two Christchurch schools are assured of reaching the semifinals after scoring wins yesterday on the second day of the New Zealand secondary schools tournament. Christchurch Boys’ High School had two relatively easy matches, beating Mount Roskill Grammar, 7-0, and Colenso High School, 4-1. Hagley High School won its only game of the day, 3-2, and was stretched to the full to do so.

Riccarton High School, In the morning, lost its second game by another large margin, 1-10, to Wellington High School. In the afternoon, it showed a great deal more purpose and won an even match. 3-2.

Christchurch After a surprise loss to Marlborough Boys’ College yesterday morning, St Paul’s Collegiate returned to form to beat Linwood High School in the fast minute In the afternoon and force a play-off in its section at the Johnson Cup tournament.

At half-time in the LinwoodSt Paul’s match the score was l-all. but St Paul’s took the lead mid-way through the second spell. Linwood fought back and equalised, but a defensive lapse in the last .30 seconds of the game let St Paul's through to score. These two teams will play off this morning to decide who will contest a semi-final. After good wins in Its first two matches, Cashmere High School slumped yesterday afternoon and was beaten by Wanganui Collegiate. Wanganui, with two draws, was thus able to force a play-off with Cashmere this morning. The winner will play the winner of the St Paul’sLinwood match in the afternoon.

With two wins and a draw. Shirley Boys' High School won section 111, while in section IV Hamilton Boys’.High School won its three section matches and was the only team in Section play with three victories. Yesterday’s results:—
