World Swimming Records Fall

(N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright/ ■ LOS ANGELES. M. Spitz, of Indiana, broke his second world record in the 1970 United States National Amateur Athletic Union swimming championships when he clocked 51.945ec in a heat of the 100 metres freestyle.

Spitz led alt the way to beat the record of 52.25ec set by M. Wenden (Australia) in the 1968 Olympic Games. Spitz broke his world record in the men's 200-metre butterfly in the seventh heat of Friday’s trials. His time of 2min 5.465ec. held up for only

eight hours until G. Hall lowered it to 2min ssec.

B. Job (Santa Clara, California), broke the world record for the 200 metres breaststroke in 2min 23.46 sec—almost 2sec under the record set by N. Pankin (Russia) in 1969.

Miss A. Jones (Cincinnati) won the 200 metres butterfly in a world record of 2min 19.325ec. Miss L. Collella was second in 2min 19.515ec. and Miss K. More was third at 2min 19.81 sec. Miss More’s world mark was 2min 20.7 sec. J. Kinsella (Illinois) won a 400 metre freestyle race with a world record of 4min 02.81 sec.

M. Stamm (California) cut the world record in the 200 metre backstroke to 2min 6.33 sec. by upsetting the American record-holder, G. Hall. R. Matthes (East Germany) set the old world standard of 2mln 6.4 sec. at Berlin in 1969.

Miss D. Meyer lowered her own world record in the 400 metre freestyle to 4mln 24.34 sec. She set her old record of 4:24.5 in 1968. Miss Jones swam the 100 metre butterfly in Imin 4.11 sec. The old record of Imin 4.ssec. was set by Adakok (Netherlands) in 1965.
