Inexpensive Computer Being Demonstrated
A new, low-cost computer system designed specially for the small business is now being demonstrated throughout New Zealand by IBM. In its simplest version it can be bought for about 845,000. or leased and operated for less than $2OOO a month. Apart from this, there are substantial savings because the new computer does not have to be installed in airconditioned rooms or on a raised floor; it needs only 150 square feet of floor space, and it is comparatively simple to programme. Three of the four basic units are available in models of differing capacity, and so Jr
the output can be increased by additional units. Other extras are disc storage and a communications adapter to permit the system to be connected with a large, central computer. These options, however, can take the price to more than $250,000. The primary purpose of the new computer system is basic accounting; order writing and invoicing, accounts receivable, inventory accounting, sales analysis, payroll and general ledger accounting. With some of the optional equipment, however, the system is also suitable for scientific work.
