Submission On ‘Mutiny’
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) , ROSYTH, August 20. 1 A lawyer representing three I of five Royal Navy seamen ! charged with mutiny submitted yesterday that it was impossible for the accused to have committed the offence because they were too drunk. The defence would prove, he said, that the men were “too stoned out of their minds.” to have organised the Navy’s first mutiny for 16 years. One of the accused, Able Seaman Edward Kirkbride, told the court-martial that he had been drinking heavily that day, and denied any intention of overthrowing the captain, resisting authority, or disobeying an order. Earlier, the court-martial had heard that a tramp had been drinking in the ship’s wardroom on the night of the alleged mutiny.
