Man Stole Mercury

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, August 20. Edward William James King, of Tokoroa, was found guilty in the Hamilton Supreme Court today on two counts of theft • The all-male jury retired for two hours before returning the verdict The accused was found guilty on charges of stealing, between December, 1969, and March, 1970, 1648 pounds of mercury, valued at $7255, and with stealing 684 pounds of mercury, worth $3082.50, between March and April this year. He was convicted and remanded to Auckland for sentence by Mr Justice Moller. The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charges. He conducted his own defence. In both cases the mercury was the property of New Zealand Forest Products’ Kinleith mill. Two alternate charges of receiving stolen mercury to the same value were deleted by his Honour this morning.
