Appreciation Of Music
Appreciation of music was very worth while and parents who encouraged their children to learn music should be commended, Mr N. Gristwood, the visiting examiner for the Trinity College of Music, London, said in Christchurch.
A person’s whole life was enriched by being able to listen to music properly, he said at the annual prizegiving of the Christchurch centre of the college. Children who learnt to play the piano would be able to appreciate music-, as the piano was the basic instrument Every musician worth his salt should have had some basic knowledge of it, he said. Some people felt that the piano was outdated in these days of electronic music, but this was definitely not so. The weakness of electronic music was its very perfection, which took away all interest Mrs M. Mills, the college’s speech examiner, said that speech training was also of value in later life because of its creativity. A student unconsciously drew much from it that enriched the mind. Before the examiners’ addresses, the centre's annual concert was held before a capacity audience at the college hall, University of Canterbury. Piano items featured largely but there were also cornet and euphonium performances and several speeches. Prizes were awarded as follows:
Trinity College Exhibition Awards.—M. Seeker (grade 7 piano) and Maryrose Wilkinson (grade 4 speech). Haywrights, Ltd, prize.—-L. Brown (grade 6). Canterbury Costing Service, Ltd, prize.—Louise Sinclair (grade 5). J. B. Hindin prize.—Brigid O’Meeghan (grade 4).
