Middle East
Sir,—David Floyd’s nonsen- ; sical conclusions on the state ’ of the Soviet oil industry are , a pathetic attempt to lend ' credibility to his untenable I claims of “Soviet imperia- , lism.” His article is a public . relations job on behalf of ’ the big United States and , British oil interests who are ' the factual imperialists in the ; Middle East today. The Soviet ’ Union was drawn into Middle , East affairs because of the blundering, diplomatic ineptitude of the Western Powers and their naked military aggression, along with Israel, to thwart the aspirations of , the Egyptians to national ’ freedom and independence in I 1956, and the refusal by John , Foster Dulles of a loan to ' Egypt to build, the Aswan Dam. The Soviet Union is now in the Middle East to ensure that the Arab national : liberation movement will not face alone and unaided the enemies of its national independence, United States and Western European imperia- : lism.—Yours, etc., M.C.H.
