ABORTION LAW

Students Want Clarification (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 27. University of Otago students decided tonight that the two main medical associations in New Zealand should be asked to clarify their interpretations of the abortion law. The decision to request the . interpretations from the Medical Association of New Zeai land and the New Zealand I Medical Association was made . at a meeting of the student - council during consideration of remits for the winter council meeting of the New Zealand University Students’ Association. The Otago students’ accommodation and welfare officer (Mr J. Howell) said the request to the two medical associations was designed to bring out variations in interpretation and provide a basis for the establishment of uniform criteria.

Scratchings for the Levin Racing Club’s meeting today include:— Gavin Parkin Steeplechase: Legatus. Ryder Stakes: Apollo Eleven, Sir Dan/ Origin, Bandolier, Ice Queen, Aureate Star, Count Ribot, Meter Maid (Our Celtic, Crown Choice, Game Defence, Big Sal, Lubra re-enter). Apprentices* Handicap: Santa Ra, I Pass, Cherie Marie, Chakiro, Miss Lucky, Sarita, Tres Joli (Tassel, Desaray, Visko, Mighty Martian re-enter). Levin Winter Cup: Tramore, Decimal Coin, Never Give In, Chiave D’Oro. Muhunoa Maiden: Democrat, First Term, Hi Honey, Maida Blue, Mortimer (Treva Rosa re-enters first division; Woodlin’s Pride re-enters second division). Mat Wills Handicap: Abbeyfoyle, Darron, Beau Dee, Bonnie Dundee, Turfman (Blue Bandit re-enters).

Koral was ridden by the light-weight, A. H. Eastwood, and was accompanied by Free Frenchman (Hillis) at a fairiy sedate pace. They ran their last half-mile in 58 3-ssec on a track affected by half an inch of rain overnight. Koral has had a restricted programme this year, because of trouble stemming from a slight fracture of a sesamoid bone and was away from racing from May until last Saturday week when he ran on the flat at Washdyke. He came back to steeplechasing with his brilliant win in the Homeby Steeplechase last Saturday—a win that almost assured him of favouritism for the Grand National.

Koral is one of three Haz-lett-owned horses in the Grand National field. The others are Mosque and Ettrick—but Ettrick’s programme has been left open, and he might run in the Enfield Steeplechase if all goes well with Koral. . Training Yesterday A cold southerly with occasional showers continued throughout yesterday’s training, and there was little to engage much attention in the efforts of horses which raced at the Christchurch Hunt meeting. Royal Blue, the runner-up to Shipboard in the Brabazon Handicap last Saturday, came up with another sound Winter Cup trial in beating his stablemate Aeolian from the

half mile by a length. Royal Blue, ridden by D. Reed, recorded 54 4-5. Later in the morning, when the ground in the home straight was chopped out, the Wingatui-trained Jay Ribbon (Denton), Pinetree (Mee), and Abacus (L. Didham) shaped well to run their halfmile in 54 3-5. Jay Ribbon has done nothing of any account in three starts since he ran Watallan close at the South Canterbury winter meeting but his gallop yesterday was encouraging. Meldie (Tucker) and Quetta (Low) were abreast just ahead of Harold Bank (M Skelton) finishing half a mile in 55 4-5. They will run for J. L. Barr’s stable in the Winter Cup, a race brilliantly won last year by Meldie. Harold Bank won easily against the milers at the South Canterbury Hunt Club's meeting last time out. Gee Tee (P. Thistoll) ran his half-mile in 55 2-5. He is a Paparua Handicap candidate, and will not be the least of the chances if the footing is soft. Fresh Campaign Every Post (Tucker), Isel Place (Reed), and I Spy (Gullery) ran in from the half-mile in 55 2-5. Every Post will start a fresh campaign against the sprinters on the second day of the Grand National meeting and may do much of his spring racing in Melbourne. Bellaware (Reed), a Southland candidate for the Winter Cup, ran her half-mile easily in 57 2-5. W. F. Ellis has her in solid condition for her Riccarton campaign. Her laststart third, fresh up, at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting, was promising.
